School of Fundamental Research in Ayurveda (SFRA) is a specialized institution dedicated to advancing research in the field of Ayurveda while preserving its fundamental principles. Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine, has a rich history and has regained universal acceptance due to its holistic approach to health. However, to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness, research and development are essential.

Kerala, with its rich biodiversity and abundant medicinal plants, is an ideal location for such research. The state has made significant contributions to the development and promotion of Ayurveda, particularly in specialized fields like Visha Vaidya, Marma Chikitsa, and Netra Chikitsa. The SFRA aims to address the historical neglect of research in Ayurveda and contribute to the modern scientific world's recognition of the curative properties of Ayurvedic medicines. This institution recognizes the immense potential of Ayurveda in promoting both physical and mental health and contributing to the well-being of individuals and society.

The SFRA envisions a comprehensive approach to Ayurvedic research, encompassing fundamental research, clinical research, translational research, and drug research. By adhering to international research standards and interdisciplinary methods, this institution seeks to strengthen the theoretical foundations of Ayurveda.

The School of Fundamental Research in Ayurveda also aims to harmonize traditional practices and textual knowledge, preserve and document Ayurvedic literature, and promote a critical understanding of the system. This approach involves three essential steps: preservation and documentation, analysis and synthesis (research and development), and education.

The SFRA's mission includes disseminating the knowledge generated through its research to benefit both Ayurvedic practitioners and the general public. Collaboration and networking with Ayurveda academies, researchers, clinicians, industry, and government institutions are critical to achieving these goals. To ensure effective organization and functioning, the SFRA is structured into 12 departments, each with specific objectives and activities. These departments interact with one another and collaborate with external institutions and faculties to enhance research outcomes in Ayurveda.

MSc (Advanced) Courses:

SFRA had been conducting an MPhil course in Translational Ayurveda, and this initiative has seen great success with two batches of students currently undergoing the program. This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to bridge the gap between traditional Ayurvedic concepts and their practical application in the modern world. It aims to produce scholars and researchers who can effectively translate Ayurvedic knowledge into actionable healthcare practices. Due to the regulatory mandates, MPhil courses have been reframed as MSc (Advanced) courses. From the year 2025, the school started MSc (Advanced) in Sports Medicine (Ayurveda), the unique one on this in the whole country.

Upcoming MSc Courses:

SFRA has ambitious plans to further expand its educational offerings. The school is in the process of planning and initiating MSc (Advanced) courses in two specialized areas: Vrikshayurveda (the study of Ayurvedic knowledge related to plants) and Mrigayurveda (the study of Ayurvedic principles applied to wildlife). These courses are expected to provide unique insights and expertise in these specific fields of Ayurveda.
